Link and location:
These ESRC studentships are located in the hub of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) based in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Southampton (www.southampton.ac.uk/socsci). You will be able to play a full part in the life of the Centre (www.ncrm.ac.uk) and share in training and research activities with the groups of research students in the School of Social Sciences and beyond (particularly, for studentship 1, the School of Geography).
Background and plan of study:
Before commencing the studentship at the start of October 2009 you will be expected to have completed an ESRC-recognised Master's programme in a social science subject relevant to the studentships. Studentship 1 will focus on data confidentiality and protection; Studentship 2 will focus on methodological innovation. In both cases it is expected that year 1 will be spent reviewing relevant literature, undertaking further training required, commencing the process of data collection, and attending the NCRM summer school. In year 2 further work on data collection and analysis will take place, along with submission of a documents required to upgrade registration from MPhil to PhD, and in year 3 the principal task will be writing up the thesis for submission.
Supervisors:
Studentships will be supervised by teams of NCRM hub co-directors. Studentship 1 will be supervised jointly by Professor Chris Skinner (Social Statistics) and Professor David Martin (Geography). Studentship 2 will be supervised by Dr Rose Wiles (Principal Research Fellow in the hub) and Professor Graham Crow (Sociology).
