ST ANNE'S COLLEGE, OXFORD
The Plumer Junior Research Fellowship
The Governing Body of St Anne's College invites
applications for the Plumer Junior Research
Fellowship, tenable from 1 October 2009. The
Fellowship is offered for research in the
Humanities, and will be offered this year for
research in Philosophy, Classical Languages and
Literature, Music, or History - British and
European after 1700. Applications will be
considered from graduates, women or men, in their
second or subsequent year of doctoral research.
Candidates registered for doctorates at other
universities are eligible. Those candidates who
have not completed their doctorate should provide
evidence that they are likely to be in a position
to submit their thesis within the first year of
the Fellowship. Appointees who are not European
Union nationals, or permanent residents entitled
to work without restriction in the UK, will
require a UK work permit; the College will make
the necessary application, but final appointment
is contingent upon this being successful.
The Fellowship will be awarded for one year in
the first instance, and will be renewed for a
second year provided that Governing Body is
satisfied that the Fellow is fulfilling the
academic and other requirements of the
Fellowship. To this end, the Fellow will be asked
to submit a written report at the end of the
Easter vacation of the first year.
It is a condition of the Fellowship that the
Fellow will live in Oxford, if not in the
College, and will take part in College life.
This condition is not intended to prevent the
Fellow from residing for reasonable periods
elsewhere in this country or abroad in the
interest of his or her research, but any period
exceeding 28 days in term time during which the
Fellow wishes to be away from Oxford will require
the permission of Governing Body.
The purpose of the Fellowship is primarily to
foster research but it is expected that the
Fellow will undertake 3 hours of teaching for the
College. Research Fellows require the permission
of Governing Body before undertaking any paid
employment whether in term or vacation. They will
be permitted to teach up to 6 hours if
circumstances warrant it, and permission has been
sought from the Tutor for Junior Research
Fellowships and their mentor in college. Such
additional teaching will be paid at normal rates.
The maximum salary of the Fellowship, including 3
hours of teaching per week, will be £20,100 but
this figure will be adjusted to take account of
any award or grant already held by or promised to
the successful applicant. Free accommodation
(bed-sitting room) will be offered if available
and required; otherwise a living-out allowance of
£2922 pa (subject to review) will be paid. The
Fellow will be a member of the Senior Common
Room, and will be entitled to all meals free
during term, and breakfast and one main meal a
day during vacation, except when the hall is
closed.
Candidates are asked to submit 8 typewritten
copies (A4) of both a curriculum vitae and a
statement (not more than 500 words) setting out
the candidate's research interests and to
complete the Appointing Committee's form. These
should be sent to the Senior Tutor's Secretary,
Miss Alia Cassam, St Anne's College, Oxford OX2
6HS, to reach her not later than Friday 6 March.
Envelopes should be marked 'Plumer JRF'. Written
work should not be sent, but may be requested at
a later date. Thus candidates are asked to
ensure that a current contact address is included
with the application. Candidates are also asked
to provide the names and addresses of two
referees who are acquainted with their academic
work and career. Referees should be asked to
write (in English please) directly to the Senior
Tutor's Secretary by Friday 6 March, without
waiting for a request from the College, or
applicants may obtain references themselves (in
envelopes signed over the seal), and submit these
with their application. It is the candidate's
responsibility to ensure that all of the relevant
materials are with us by the application deadline
(we will notify you of missing references);
incomplete applications will be discarded.
Candidates are advised that a personal interview
will be essential for those shortlisted. The
interview date has yet to be confirmed.
Dr Anne Mullen
Senior Tutor, January 2009
Note: Unfortunately, because of the number of
applications received and the high demands on the
time of committee members, no feedback can be
offered at any stage of the appointment process.
The committee would, however, wish to emphasize
that experience suggests that any rejection is
likely to be a result of the strength of the
overall field rather than of any strongly
critical view of the application.

The College
St Anne's College was founded in 1878 to promote
the education of women within the University of
Oxford, and was fully incorporated as a college
in 1952, as one of the four solely for women. It
was one of the first to admit both men and women
undergraduates, some thirty years ago, and
quickly established a near equal mix of men and
women in both the Senior, Middle, and Junior
Common Rooms, spread quite uniformly across the
subjects taught in the University. St Anne's is a
modern college both physically and in outlook,
and is noted for its lively and unstuffy approach
to teaching and research, a legacy of the
pioneering spirits of the College's founders. The
Research Fellow will be expected to contribute
actively and fully to the intellectual life of
the College, and to matters that support and
enhance it.
St Anne's is committed to developing subjects at
the boundaries of traditional disciplines and to
integrating undergraduates, graduates and
research and tutorial fellows in 'Subject
Families'. Subject family evenings are held
regularly, with lectures by graduates and
researchers, organised by our Research Fellows in
each of 4 subject areas (Humanities, Social
Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences).
We also hold a termly Domus seminar, where
Fellows present aspects of their own research to
the Fellowship, and hence we aim to ensure a
broad and stimulating intellectual environment
for our Fellows, and the post- and undergraduate
student body.
