Philosophy and the Humanities - Bedford Square - Autumn 2009

Dear all

Here's the Autumn programme for the seminar series "Philosophy and the
Humanities", which will take place in Bedford Square (not in Egham!). As
you'll observe, the opening paper will be given by Andrew Bowie and will
include musical examples and be followed by a performance of the Andrew
Bowie Jazz Quartet (or Trio, depending on access!). All are, of course, most
welcome.

Also included are details of a one day conference "Thirty Years After:
Richard Rorty and the Mirror of Nature" which is being run with the generous
support of the Institute of Philosophy.

Finally, one of the participants in the Rorty conference, Albrecht Wellmer,
has agreed to give a supplementary talk in which he'll discuss the lecture
he gave when he received the Adorno Prize of the City of Frankfurt in 2006
(previous recipients include Ligeti, Derrida, Godard, Boulez and Habermas).
The text of the original lecture "Adorno and the Difficulties of a Critical
Reconstruction of the Historical Present" will be posted on the HARC website
(http://www.rhul.ac.uk/Research/HARC/main.html) soon.

Any inquiries about the series can be addressed to me. More details about
registering for the Rorty conference will be found in due course on the
Institute's events page.
