Conference purpose
The Association for Cognitive Research (ARCo: http://www.arco.asso.fr) is a French learned society that promotes cognitive science and cross-disciplinary research on cognition from the perspective of the humanities, the engineering sciences and the life sciences.
The ARCo conference, now annual since 2006, has proved a fruitful occasion to gather communities of confirmed researchers and young cognitive scientists interested in confronting views on cognition. The 2009 edition of the conference will take place December 9th-11th 2009 at the University of Rouen (France) and will focus on ‘sense-making and interpretation’.
Themes
Sense-making and interpretation are central themes of the cognitive sciences that are most often approached from a third-person perspective, viz. from the observer’s or the expert’s viewpoint. Others have proposed alternative positions, claiming for a first-person perspective, viz. regarding the subject’s view in a real-life situation.
Both the third and the first-person perspectives may tackle the following (non exhaustive) questions:
How does sense arise for/to the subject?
What is the role of context in the emergence of meaning?
What is the role of the subject’s activity in that emergence?
What are the constitutive elements of the subject’s interpretative space?
Is gathering data itself some sort of sense-making?
How does meaning emerge from (or is built out of) the perceptive space or scene? How does it relate to interaction, e.g. in a professional context?
Which methods can we use for the description and analysis of interpretative processes?
How to account for the dynamic and contextual nature of meaning construction?
These questions are transverse to the disciplines of the cognitive sciences and it will be interesting to confront the way they are answered in psychology, linguistics, artificial intelligence, neurosciences, sociology, philosophy, ethology, anthropology, MMI, etc.

Meaning and experience
Meaning, the virtual and the material
Meaning, sense and signification Interpretation, representation and mental spaces
Enactive approaches to interpretation
Meaning and formalism
Interpretation, human interactions (mediated or not)
Interpretation and MMI
Interpretation of computerized traces
(Non-)Computerized help for document interpretation
Hermeneutics and intertextual approaches
Compositionality versus complexity
Submissions
(Papers): the prospective speakers are invited to submit articles (in English or French) from at least 3500 words to 6000 words (see the format here: http://www.intellectica.org/auteurs.htm).
Selected articles will be considered for publication.
(Posters): 1000-word abstracts are expected for the poster presentations.

Notification of acceptance: September 15, 2009
