Sheffield University has now been allocated six studentships in the subject area
of Philosophy, under the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Block Grant
Partnerships Scheme
We have three Research Preparation Masters Scheme and three Doctoral awards.
Most EU nationals admitted to the Department of Philosophy to read for our
Masters courses in Philosophy, Political Theory or Cognitive Studies are likely
to be eligible to apply for the former awards. Most EU nationals admitted to
read for the degree of PhD in Philosophy are likely to be eligible for the
latter.
The University also has a number of University Studentships and Fee Studentships
for which applicants for AHRC Block Grant Partnership awards can also apply.
There is a single application form for all three studentships.
The relevant forms are available here.
http://www.shef.ac.uk/pgresearch/studentships/uos.html
As well as the main application form there is also a form here you will need to
ask each of two referees to complete and send to us. (You need to ask your
referees to do this even if they have already supplied references for your
application to the course.) The official deadline for those wishing to apply
for the above studentships is the 31st March. We strongly encourage applicants
to get their forms in to the philosophy department by the 17th March, however,
so that we can ensure that everything is in order with the relevant
applications before passing them on to the University on the 31st.
Before you can apply for one of these awards you must first have made an
application for a place on the relevant course. The relevant forms are here
http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/apply/applying.html
(for all MA courses)
and here
http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply
(for PhDs).
There is some general advice on Philosophy applications here:

We are a flourishing department of 19 academic staff offering expert supervision
in many areas of philosophy including prominently, metaphysics, epistemology,
philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of mind, moral
and political philosophy, feminist philosophy, aesthetics, Greek philosophy,
pragmatism and German idealism.
We currently have 44 graduate students of whom 12 are AHRC funded and a further
12 are supported by Sheffield University fee waivers.
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise for which all our academic staff were
submitted 35% of our submitted output was ranked world leading, 35%
internationally excellent, 35% internationally recognized and 0% merely
nationally recognized. Our grade point average was 4th highest in the UK after
UCL, St Andrews and Kings and ahead of both Oxford and Cambridge.
Of our Research Environment the 2008 Panel wrote: "Research structure and
income, research strategy, staffing policy, research student numbers and the
number of research studentships are all outstanding, as were contributions to
the broader environment. The research training and career advice for research
students, the number of conferences and workshops hosted, and the important
contribution of the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Studies, are particularly
impressive."
