The Junior Research Group "Interdisciplinary Studies in the Production of Culture", affiliated to the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research, awards two full three-year Doctoral scholarships for one sociologist and one historian pursuing a dissertation project in the realm of the cultural industries. 

Members of the research group will investigate the creation and distribution of cultural content in areas such as film, television, music, advertising, fashion, computer games and food. Focusing on actors and networks, markets, organisational structures, creative processes, discourses and intermediaries, the research group aims at contributing to a better understanding of the cultural industries, the link between local production and global markets and the conditions for creativity.

The group is currently set up by historian Klaus Nathaus, who is working on a history of the music industry in Britain and Germany between 1930 and 1990, and sociologist Lise Skov, who has worked extensively on the fashion business and has started on a project on the European luxury fashion industry since 1945.

Applicants are required to have a very good MA degree in history or sociology. They should be interested in combining sociological models with empirical, historically grounded research. Scholarship holders will be fellows of the newly founded Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology, an inspiring research environment for a diverse group of about 160 doctoral candidates.

There is no deadline for applications; starting date of the scholarships is 01.10.2009 or earlier, subject to negotiation.
